A public dispute has emerged between two prominent figures in Bangladesh cricket, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan, just ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Tamim Iqbal, who had been initially named in Bangladesh’s 15-member squad for the tournament, decided to withdraw from the competition due to certain restrictions imposed on him. These restrictions included being asked to sit out of Bangladesh’s opening game and potentially batting lower down the order. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cited concerns about Tamim’s fitness after he complained of back discomfort following an ODI against New Zealand.

Tamim alleges that he was taken aback when a high-ranking BCB official communicated the decision through a video message hours after the team had left for India. The situation escalated when it was reported that a phone call from BCB chief Nazmul Hasan led to a heated exchange between Tamim and the official, during which foul language was allegedly used.

BCB and team management clarified that the decision to alter Tamim’s role in the opening game against Afghanistan was a tactical move aimed at maximizing his performance against Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan. This tactical decision, they emphasized, was not personal in nature.

However, numbers from past performances against Afghanistan suggested that Tamim struggled against their spinners, which fueled the idea of altering his batting position. Tamim’s retirement during the Afghanistan ODI series also raised eyebrows.

Tensions had been brewing between Tamim and the management, and his public disagreement with Shakib al Hasan, the all-format skipper, added to the friction. Khaled Mahmud was appointed as the team director to ease tensions in the dressing room.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan confirmed that Tamim and Shakib were not on speaking terms and that efforts to reconcile their differences had failed.

In a televised interview, Shakib accused Tamim of irresponsible leadership for retiring during the Afghanistan ODI series, which resulted in Bangladesh losing the series. Shakib expressed his disappointment, stating that Tamim’s decision had put the team in a difficult situation.

As the World Cup approaches, Bangladesh faces the challenge of putting this controversy behind them and focusing on their campaign. However, the nation remains divided on this issue, creating additional pressure on the team to perform well in favorable conditions.
