New Zealand’s cricket captain, Kane Williamson, is set to miss the team’s opening match of the World Cup against England, scheduled for October 5, as he focuses on his ongoing injury rehabilitation. New Zealand Cricket has also confirmed that Williamson will participate only as a batter in the team’s first warm-up game.

Head coach Gary Stead emphasized the team’s commitment to Williamson’s long-term recovery, stating, “Right from the start, we’ve taken a long-term view on Kane’s return to play.” He added, “His recovery is progressing well, and our priority is to ensure that he can handle the demands and intensity of international cricket. We’ll continue to assess Kane’s rehabilitation on a day-by-day basis and won’t rush his return.”

Despite concerns about a knee injury Williamson sustained during this year’s IPL, New Zealand included him in the World Cup squad with the hope that he would regain full fitness during the tournament. In the absence of Williamson, Tom Latham will lead the team in the warm-up match against Pakistan.

New Zealand fans and cricket enthusiasts will be closely monitoring Williamson’s progress, hoping for his swift recovery and return to full form as the tournament progresses.
