In a strategic move to buy time and contest potential sanctions from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), South Africa has successfully appealed, ensuring no immediate actions are taken against Temba Bavuma’s cricket team. Among the numerous possible consequences faced by the Proteas was the risk of losing their flag representation during the ongoing World Cup and being banned from hosting major sporting events. This matter concerning South Africa’s compliance with WADA regulations has now been referred to arbitration.

“Today, WADA has officially received notice from the South Africa National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) challenging the allegations of non-compliance and the proposed sanctions. WADA will promptly transfer the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a thorough evaluation. As a result, the allegations of non-compliance are temporarily suspended, and the associated consequences will not take effect until CAS reaches a verdict,” stated WADA in a recent announcement.

Earlier, WADA’s Executive Committee (ExCo) had declared the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) of South Africa as non-compliant with the WADA Code, owing to South Africa’s legislation not aligning with the 2021 Code.

With the matter now deferred, the International Cricket Council (ICC) can also breathe a sigh of relief, as no immediate action is required against the South African cricket team, which has been delivering exceptional performances in the ongoing World Cup.
