In a crucial move for the Sri Lankan cricket team, veteran cricketer Angelo Mathews has been called up to replace Matheesha Pathirana in the squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023. This decision follows Matheesha Pathirana’s unfortunate shoulder injury during a warm-up match, which rendered him unable to participate in the tournament. The International Cricket Council (ICC) officially confirmed Mathews’ inclusion as a replacement in a recent media release.
With an impressive track record of 221 One Day Internationals (ODIs), Mathews brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Sri Lankan team, making him a valuable asset in their World Cup campaign. Mathews had initially been named as a traveling reserve and had been actively participating in practice sessions in Bengaluru, India, where Sri Lanka is preparing to face England on Thursday, October 26.
Sri Lanka’s World Cup journey has encountered challenges, as they have suffered three defeats out of four matches, leaving them currently placed 9th on the points table. Their captain, Dasun Shanaka, had earlier been ruled out of the tournament due to a thigh injury, leading to the inclusion of Chamika Karunaratne as his replacement. Angelo Mathews now becomes the second injury replacement in the squad, and his presence is expected to bolster the team’s chances as they aim for a stronger performance in the World Cup.
