Bangladesh’s cricket captain, Shakib Al Hasan, is set to sit out the team’s final match of the ongoing World Cup and faces the possibility of missing the upcoming home series against New Zealand due to a left index finger injury. The injury occurred during Bangladesh’s recent victory over Sri Lanka on November 6 in Delhi. A post-match X-ray confirmed a fracture, sidelining him for the remainder of the tournament. In his absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the team against Australia on November 11.

Despite being struck on his left index finger early in his innings, Shakib continued to bat with the aid of supportive taping and painkillers. However, an emergency X-ray in Delhi following the game revealed a fracture in the left PIP joint. The estimated recovery time is three to four weeks, and Shakib is set to return to Bangladesh to commence his rehabilitation.

Shakib, who had amassed over 600 runs in the World Cup four years ago, had a subdued performance in India this time, scoring only 186 runs from seven innings at an average of 26.57. He contributed 82 runs in the last match and also secured two wickets, earning him the Player of the Match award. Shakib was at the center of the recent ‘timed out’ drama that unfolded in Delhi and had raised eyebrows earlier in the tournament when he briefly returned home to work on his game with his personal coach.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Anamul Haque will officially replace Shakib in the 15-man squad for the final game. Anamul has appeared in 45 ODIs for Bangladesh, with his most recent appearance occurring almost two months ago during an Asia Cup match against India.

Bangladesh, with only two wins out of eight games, has already been eliminated from contention for the World Cup semifinals. Nevertheless, they are still in the race for qualification to the 2025 Champions Trophy.
