Kane Williamson
In addition to the opening slots, there are a few surprises in this squad, most notably the inclusion of Kane Williamson. Williamson had not been in action since early November, due to a broken right index finger and yet he has been named to this team.
There is no question that Williamson has performed admirably for New Zealand over his career. He holds the world record for the most number of catches taken by any player and is ranked among the top 10 all-time leading run scorers.
Tom Latham
He is also an outstanding fielder, having played every match of the Sri Lankan tour as well as both Tests against Pakistan earlier in 2017.
His bowling is coming along too, with experience in limited overs cricket and four wickets so far this summer.
A left-handed batsman and an accurate off-break bowler, Tom has a lot to offer on the field. Off the pitch, he has been described as one of our best interviewees by John Buchanan – New Zealand’s Head Coach during their early days at the top level.
Latham will captain New Zealand during their World T20 campaign next year and it will be interesting to see how he shapes up against quality opposition in India.
Of course, there are other contenders like Corey Anderson, Martin Guptill, and Colin Munro but Latham should get his opportunity in due course!
Ross Taylor
The New Zealand team is led by their captain Kane Williamson and will be captained in all three formats of the game. Ross Taylor, who has scored a century on the way to leading his side to the ICC Cricket World Cup final in 2015, is set to lead his side into the quadrennial cricket event. Luke Ronchi, Colin Munro and Ross Taylor all return as part of a squad that possesses significant depth as well as world-class ability.
Tim Southee
Timothy Tim Paul Southee is a New Zealand international cricketer who plays mainly as a pace bowler. He made his Test debut in 2010 and has played more than 130 matches since then.
Southee had taken his 300th Test wicket during the 1st Test against England at Eden Park. The best moments of Southee’s career are holding batsmen of all calibers at bay, with his skills and perseverance resulting in him dismissing any player from aggressive players like Rohit Sharma to left-hand bat Virender Sehwag.
Scott Kuggeleijn
Scott’s best performance in limited overs cricket came against the Netherlands at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, where he took 3 wickets while giving away only 21 runs. Scott has been selected to play in all three formats of the game and is still just 20 years old with plenty of potential. Scott was named as one of six players who played every match during New Zealand’s campaign at the 2016 U-19 World Cup. He made his debut in first-class cricket this season, taking 5 wickets from four matches.
George Worker
The Kiwis will have an abundance of batting talent at their disposal with some international heavyweights like Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, and Kane Williamson.
Here’s the full list of the New Zealand squad: 1. Luke Ronchi, 2. Tom Latham (C), 3. Colin Munro, 4. James Neesham, 5. Tom Blundell, 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Mitchell Santner 8. Tim Southee 9.
Lockie Ferguson
The team is a mixture of players who have experience playing in the Big Bash and those like Colin de Grandhomme, who have less international exposure. New Zealander Faf du Plessis will serve as skipper at the global event. The high level of competition amongst the players gives this side an advantage over other teams that might not have such richly decorated squads.
Colin de Grandhomme
He is right-handed but can play with both the right and left. He bats in the middle order and bowls off-spin, bowling slower balls and cutters. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2013 and took six wickets. In January 2018, he was added to the Test side in New Zealand’s tour of India after Tim Southee was injured on day one of the second Test at Eden Gardens.
In December 2018, de Grandhomme along with skipper Kane Williamson were awarded special contracts by Cricket New Zealand for all formats of international cricket until 2022.
James Neesham
Neesham is a very strong fielder with an impressive throwing arm and great stamina. He also possesses an attractive, orthodox batting technique that belies his power-hitting ability. He plays in the ‘dressing gown’ style of batting where he often strokes the ball into the gaps in the field, runs hard and sometimes can seem to do everything well when his innings are on.
He’s got a habit of popping up in different positions in the field, getting some great results there too, and has played at the point for Wellington and taken two catches on debut against Tasmania when standing up to offspinner Nathan Lyon who was playing in his first game for NSW.
Jimmy Neesham
With two of their top batsman injured and a few youngsters who have been making waves on the world stage, New Zealand has now announced their 15-member squad with Jimmy Neesham returning to national colors. The middle-order batsman last played an international game in November last year, but he’s firmly back on the radar after three consecutive centuries in domestic cricket this summer.
Neesham was only 20 when he made his debut in 2013 against India, but that’s long since faded into the background and he’ll be raring to go come the next global T20 tournament.
Seth Rance
There are so many exciting new and old faces in the New Zealand set-up. The latest hero to arrive on the scene is bowler Shaun Haig. He burst onto the scene against Bangladesh when they toured in January this year and returned home with five wickets from his ten overs, with an incredible economy rate of just 1.2 runs per over! There’s no doubt that he’ll be chomping at the bit for a shot at some more international opposition in UAE next month. In terms of established stars, Corey Anderson has been flying the flag well in limited overs cricket of late; those five sixes he hit on Monday evening were brutal!
Anton Devcich
# Captain Anton Devcich is a right-handed batsman who can bowl allrounder. He was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year 2016, one of ten players worldwide who were picked as quick movers and whose career could go to higher levels. This season he has finished with an average of over 30 and four centuries, which puts him in elite company. # A middle-order batsman with an improving reputation, Devcich made his international debut in 2012 against West Indies, scoring 39 off 40 balls before being run out. In 2017, he was called into New Zealand’s Test squad for the home series against Bangladesh in December as cover for BJ Watling but remained on standby.
Ish Sodhi
The New Zealand cricket team announce their list of 15 players to take part in the inaugural 2020 ICC T20 World Cup. Players include new stars Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry, and Mitchell McClenaghan who are sure to attract a lot of interest in the tournament.
Mitch Santner will be returning after his injury and Chris Harris is an under-23 representative that will be vying for a position. David Willey, Jofra Archer, and Nathan McCullum have been offered one-year contracts with NZC and will not feature in the tournament but will be on board should they need any assistance from overseas players.
Mitchell Santner
He’s a crucial member of New Zealand’s attack, spinning balls away from right-handed batsmen and then shaping deliveries into them or hitting them towards their body – which has had success because it restricts their movement when they turn on him. Santner is an excellent fielder with an impressive range to both his left and right, making him a valuable asset at the death. His numbers have been modest in comparison to some other quicks but he has shown enough promise to warrant selection in the side.
