Growing concerns surround the prolonged absence of Hardik Pandya from the Indian cricket team. His absence from the optional practice session on Thursday indicates that his return to the team may be delayed beyond initial expectations. As he remains engaged in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, the exact date of his comeback remains uncertain.

It’s now a subject of serious discussion whether his recovery process will take more time than originally anticipated. His availability for the upcoming match against England on Sunday seems unlikely, and speculations surround his readiness for subsequent fixtures, including the match against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on November 2 and the game against South Africa in Kolkata on November 5. What’s certain at this juncture is that he won’t be playing in the Lucknow game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had initially hoped for Pandya’s swift recovery after he sustained an ankle injury in Pune while playing against Bangladesh on October 19. In a media release, the BCCI had stated, “Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.” Despite it being referred to as a minor injury, Pandya’s return has been delayed.

Meanwhile, the decision regarding the team’s composition, whether to include a third spinner like R Ashwin or opt for three pacers as in Dharamsala, remains undecided. The nature of the pitch in Lucknow, which isn’t extremely dry, typically favoring spinners, adds an element of uncertainty. The final decision will be made closer to the match. The Indian team is scheduled for another optional practice session on Friday afternoon, as confirmed by a team spokesman.
