Sydney Sixers’ veteran left-arm spinner, Steve O’Keefe, is poised to close the chapter on his illustrious career as he contemplates retirement at the end of the current BBL season. The upcoming BBL Sydney derby against Sydney Thunder at the SCG could potentially be O’Keefe’s final outing on his home turf, adding sentimental value to the fixture.

While the left-arm spinner has regularly discussed retirement in recent seasons, this time, it seems more definitive. O’Keefe, currently the third-highest wicket-taker for Sixers in the BBL with 94 wickets at an average of 23.40, expressed that the demands of year-round cricket and training have taken a toll on him. He plans to relocate to northern New South Wales and shift his focus away from playing cricket.

Reflecting on his accomplished career, O’Keefe mentioned that he feels fulfilled with his achievements and has had a lot of fun during the current season. Despite a lower wicket count this season, he remains a crucial asset to the Sixers with his economical bowling, conceding just 6.65 runs per over.

O’Keefe, who made his T20 debut in 2009, has witnessed numerous highs, including playing for Australia and winning back-to-back BBL titles with Sixers. His journey also had its challenges, notably being axed from the New South Wales state list in 2020, a setback he managed to overcome by finding a new lease of life in the BBL.

Looking ahead, O’Keefe expressed aspirations to work as a spin-bowling coach and potentially venture into commentary. His contributions to the game extend beyond his on-field performances, and he aims to share his expertise in spin bowling with aspiring cricketers.

As the BBL season progresses, O’Keefe’s retirement looms, marking the end of an era for a player who has left an indelible mark on Australian cricket.
