Trevor Bayliss, the head coach of Sydney Thunder, will be absent from his team’s upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) fixture against Adelaide Strikers as he prioritizes attending the IPL auction in Dubai on behalf of Punjab Kings. Bayliss, who previously traveled to India during the 2022-23 BBL season for the IPL auction, will once again miss a fixture in his home role to participate in this crucial event.
This move reflects a trend seen in the cricketing world, where coaches like Andy Flower have left their leagues to attend the IPL auction. Notably, other prominent coaches such as Daniel Vettori, assistant coach of Australia, and Ricky Ponting, coach of Delhi Capitals, have also managed IPL commitments alongside their respective roles.
Bayliss, who took over as Thunder’s coach in the 2021-22 BBL season, has led the team to the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Despite Thunder’s recent loss to Brisbane Heat, his absence from the dugout against the Strikers highlights the prominence of the IPL and the decisions coaches make regarding their priorities.
During his absence, Shawn Bradstreet, Bayliss’ assistant, will step in as the interim head coach. The Thunder management confirmed Bayliss’s return for their upcoming clash against Melbourne Stars in Albury later in the week.
Bayliss, appointed as coach for Punjab Kings in 2022, aims to bolster the team’s performance after their prolonged inability to qualify for the IPL knockout stages. With a significant budget of INR 29.1 crore and the opportunity to add eight players to the squad, including two overseas signings, Bayliss emphasized the desire to strengthen the team strategically.
“We don’t think we need to overhaul the team entirely,” stated Bayliss. “However, strengthening in a few areas can make us a stronger unit next season. We’re seeking players who align with our positive, aggressive brand of cricket for those specific positions.”
The IPL’s influence is evident, shaping decisions and priorities even at the coaching level, as Bayliss and other mentors balance their commitments across multiple leagues for the greater benefit of their respective teams.
