Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka stated that the team’s main focus is to win the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be played in India later this year. Dasun Shanaka said that the team is eager to deliver in the biggest cricketing tournament in the world.

Sri Lanka became the first team from the Qualifiers to secure a berth in the 2023 World Cup. The Dasun Shanaka-led team beat Zimbabwe by nine wickets in Bulawayo on Sunday, July 2. The Lankan team chased down the target of 166 runs with 16.5 overs to spare.

It’s A Big Achievement – Dasun Shanaka

In the post-match presentation, Dasun Shanaka labelled qualifying for the World Cup as a big achievement for the team.

“It’s a big achievement but still we know what we have done in the past in World Cups especially, we won the 1996 World Cup and were the 2011 runners-up,” Shanaka said.

“We have been playing amazing cricket in the World Cup so it’s a much-needed thing for Sri Lanka to be up there on that big stage,” he added.

Still, We Are A Better Side – Dasun Shanaka

Dasun Shanaka expressed his belief in the team’s capability to secure qualification for the World Cup, even in the presence of tough competition from other teams.

“Coming through the Qualifier it is always tough, but still, we go through the process and we knew that with the team we have got here that we were going to qualify for the World Cup.”

“Credit to the other teams they played really well in the tournament, some of the teams gave us some good fights in between, but still we are a better side,” he further stated.

Waiting To Deliver There As Well – Dasun Shanaka

Shanaka emphasized the significance of preparing for the upcoming World Cup against India, highlighting that the team’s main focus is to deliver their best performance in the tournament.

“Yes, there (was) pressure here, but still the pressure begins on the big stage. So I think that World Cup ahead is the main focus and main target for us, we are waiting to deliver there as well,” he concluded.
