Major Overhaul Expected in Bangladesh’s Cricket Coaching Staff

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is poised for a significant shake-up in its coaching personnel following the ongoing ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. A reliable BCB source has confirmed these impending changes and clarified that the positions of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and assistant coach Nick Pothas, who recently joined the team in the lead-up to the World Cup, are not currently in jeopardy. However, their future within the team hinges on their ability to produce positive results.

Reports suggest that BCB is not inclined to extend the contracts of their pace bowling coach Allan Donald, spin bowling coach Rangana Herath, and fielding coach Shane McDermott.

Furthermore, the team’s analyst, Shrinivas Chandrasekaran, is preparing to step down from his role after the culmination of the showpiece tournament in India. This decision, he cited, is primarily due to personal reasons related to extensive travel commitments. Although BCB extended an offer to keep Shrinivas with the national setup beyond the current global event, he declined, citing family responsibilities. Shrinivas revealed, “BCB was kind enough to offer me, but I declined since my father passed away. It has become extremely difficult to leave my mom and wife alone at home and travel.”

Chandika Hathurusingha, who previously coached the team from 2014 to 2017, signed a two-year contract with BCB, commencing in February 2023, to replace Russell Domingo, who left his post prematurely. Assistant coach Nick Pothas also committed to a two-year contract, joining in April.

Bangladesh has endured a five-match losing streak in the ongoing ICC World Cup, prompting skipper Shakib al Hasan to label it as one of their worst performances in recent global tournaments.

Previously, BCB parted ways with Steve Rhodes following a disappointing performance in the last World Cup, and both parties mutually agreed on the separation. While it may seem that Rhodes was made a scapegoat, the dynamics of coaching appointments often involve various factors and time limits. Taskin Ahmed, a Bangladesh pace bowler, commented on this, stating, “No coaches harmed us, but everyone has a time limit. At times it is extended, and at times it is not, and there are times when the coach doesn’t want to stay while there are times when the board doesn’t want to keep the coach. When they leave, there are a lot of talks that there was this and that problem, and it happens for most of them when they are leaving. But how much is true, even we don’t know, and later we come to know that he is leaving for this or that reason. But whoever worked with us has helped us.”
