Ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has picked the key players for Team India. All eyes will be on Rohit Sharma & Co. as the team will be under immense pressure to improve their track record in ICC events in recent years.

India have not won the World Cup since 2011 while they have not won an ICC title since 2013. The performance in the last couple of years or so have been even more disappointing. In 2019 World Cup, the Men in Blue lost at the semifinal stage before bowing out of the group stage in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

The performance in 2022 T20 World Cup was not impressive either as Team India suffered a crushing 10-wicket loss at the hands of eventual winners England in the semifinal. Last month, the Rohit Sharma-led side also suffered a humiliating 209-run loss against Australia in the World Test Championship final.

Harbhajan Singh picks India’s key players:

As India gear up for the World Cup at home this year, Harbhajan Singh has picked the players who will be key to the team’s fortunes in the competition. The two-time World Cup winner has said that captain Rohit will be one of the most important players for the team in the upcoming marquee event.

Rohit was the star with the bat in the 2019 World Cup. The opening batsman had scored 648 runs at an average of more than 81 with the help of record 5 centuries to finish the competition as the highest run-scorer. However, his performance in recent times have not really met the lofty standards he had set in his prime. Harbhajan also picked Rohit’s opening partner Shubman Gill and spin-bowling allrounder Ravindra Jadeja as other key players.

“If I talk about India, it comes back to your opening partnership. A lot will depend on Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill – I hope he is part of the team. It will be unfortunate if you don’t play him,” Harbhajan Singh told Star Sports.

“I think Shubman Gill will be the key. He bats extremely well in Indian conditions. In bowling, Ravindra Jadeja, if he fires like we saw in the IPL, where he picked up more than 20 wickets,” he added.

The World Cup is scheduled to begin on October 5 with the clash between England and New Zealand. India will begin their campaign on October 8 with a mouthwatering clash against Australia in Chennai.
