Spin bowler Tanveer Sangha has brushed aside concerns regarding the Manuka Oval pitch’s condition before Sydney Thunder’s BBL opener. The pitch suffered damage due to a storm during the final day of the Prime Minister’s XI match last week, leading to an abrupt end to the game against Pakistan. Heavy rain and strong winds caused the covers to blow off the pitch, rendering it unplayable and resulting in a draw.
Despite the recent inclement weather, Thunder is set to face Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval. The ground has experienced relatively dry conditions since the downpour, and the forecast for the game day remains promising.
In preparation for Tuesday’s match, Thunder has trained at Manuka Oval, with the game set to take place on a wicket adjacent to the one affected during the PM’s XI match. Final preparations on the pitch were underway as of Monday afternoon.
Drawing insights from teammates Cameron Bancroft and Nathan McAndrew, who participated in the PM’s XI match, Thunder remains optimistic. Sangha expressed confidence in the pitch, stating, “It didn’t look too bad. It looked fine,” adding, “We expect a pretty true surface, a pretty nice wicket.”
Acknowledging the differences between red-ball and T20 cricket, Sangha anticipates a positive outcome, emphasizing Manuka Oval’s historical reputation for good matches and strong crowds. He eagerly awaits the game and believes it will be a conducive ground for both batting and bowling.
The recent pitch discussions follow the cancellation of Sunday’s match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers due to rain saturating the Geelong pitch.
Looking ahead, Sangha anticipates the return of English top-order batter Alex Hales, expressing the significance of his contribution to the Thunder squad. “He’s huge for us,” Sangha affirmed, praising Hales for his batting prowess and the intimidation factor he brings to opponents, instilling confidence within the team.
